The Voice SA: We Rank The Top 16

Another week, another ranking - this time of the Top 16. I'm till seething over the premature exits of both Bryce and Veronique (there were a few other questionable decisions as well) but it time to let the show run its course I guess.

Here's us ranking the Top 16:

16.

R: Lindo

Karen probably made the worst decision in The Voice history when she declared Lindo the victor in his knockout over the crazy talented Veronique. He has a limited range, shaky pitch, and nothing that sets him apart from other, more talented artists. He can dance, but he can't sing while doing it.

J: Freddy

Freddy seems to be a cool guy but I just don’t get his mass appeal. Sure he can hold a tune but is It worth a huge recording contract? Don’t think so. Not yet anyway.

15.

R: Freddy

Kahn thinks his voice is money, and I don't get it. It's unique, yes, but not in a good way. It's sometimes hard to hear what he's singing. It'll take the best producers - and autotune - to get that voice ready for radio.

J: Lindo

Lindo will forever and a day be remembered as the guy who sent Veronique home. He is an entertainer, sure, but he is not up to the same standard vocally as the other contestants left in the competition.

14.

R: Caroline

She has a solid voice no doubt, but not much more than that. There's nothing unique about the aspiring diva, and her range isn't big enough to truly compete with the real divas. Nice voice, but it stops there. She might get the Afrikaner votes, though, and win a spot in the Top 8.

J: Luke

Enough with the gravelly voiced rockers already! Luke has been pretty consistent so far but I don’t think the SA music scene has space for another cookie-cut artist. He is just too much like last year’s winner and his buddy Richard Stirton,

13.

R: Amanda

Amanda had a great audition, but since then her lack of confidence has overshadowed her performances. She has a soulful vocal with good depth, but I'm afraid her lack of stage presence makes her rather dull on stage. She misses the 'it' factor, and unless Karen saves her, she won't make it through.

J: Caroline

Caroline is a pretty girl with a pretty voice and got the nod over Bryce in what will be remembered as one of the biggest WTF moments of the season. The girl can sing but I don’t think this is the correct platform for her. Huge success in the Afrikaans market is possibly awaiting her.

12.

R: Fatman

Good voice and a lot of unpredictable song choices. That said, it's hard to decide whether he's a serious artist in the making or just a funny comedy act that can sing well. I think he has potential to be successful in the latter.

J: PJ

PJ’s falsetto is insane but I keep getting him mixed up with JJ and that is not a good thing. How memorable is he? He has been let down by poor song choices but with a bit of polish he could possible shine rather bright.

11.

R: PJ

The dude with the dynamic falsetto. That's his trademark. His battle performance was one of the strongest of the season, but his knockout performance was very underwhelming, largely due to the song not showing off his beautiful falsetto. Pick better songs, and he may very well surprise.

J: Amanda

Amanda was raved about after her Blind Audition but failed to really shine since. She has a charming, soulful voice but her stage presence still leaves a lot to be desired. If Amanda can find some confidence within herself she could move up the rankings quite a bit.

10.

R: Luke

He's had a pretty solid run so far, peaking with his interpretation of an Alicia Keys staple. Yet, he reminds me too much of his bro, and last year's deserving winner, Richard Stirton. The gravelly soulful rock voice is very present amongst white dudes, and I'm not sure whether he'll be able to stand out. I don't doubt that he can pull off a killer performance, though.

J: JJ

JJ and PJ are pretty much interchangeable for me at this stage. He did pretty well with the Mike Posner number but he has not been the most consistent of performers. JJ has the added advantage of a pretty nifty backstory which, thankfully, he doesn’t seem to have to rely on to much just yet.

9.

R: Zee

She's been a low-key contestant for most of the season, but her knockout performance was her moment to emerge from the shadows. Great, clear, commercial voice that could probably sing anything.

J: Fatman

I find Fatman highly amusing and the fact that he can actually hold a note pretty well is the reason why I ranked him in my Top 10. He is a likeable guy and has garnered a lot of support but his song choices have been questionable and that could ultimately lead to his downfall.

8.

R: John James

The 18-year-old has a unique, warm tone that sets him apart from the rest of the contestants, but it wasn't until his knockout performance of a Mike Posner club staple that his potential truly shone through. He'll make a great commercial recording artist, but I'm just not sure that the average The Voice viewer will see that.

J: Josh

Josh is the epitome of old school rock. He has a big voice and the outfits to boot. It is all very theatrical and over the top. Talent show viewers generally fall for this kind of thing and he could ultimately win it all. Would personally keep Josh on stage performing in musicals because he is killer at that.

7.

R: Josh

He has a killer voice. There is no debating that. It's big, theatrical, and very 80's rock. What it's not is contemporary. It's not unique. It's throwback. Sure, it's objectively one of the biggest voices in the competition, but I don't see the recording star in him. The Voice's demographic supports that sorta voice, so he might just pull off the win.

J: Zee

Zee is one of the most underrated contestants this season. The spunky girl is as versatile as they come and after her Knockout performance it is clear that she could very well be a commercial star.

6.

R: Marissa

Another contestant that Karen shouldn't have let go, along with Veronique and Armand. She's got a killer female rock voice that is also suited to pop music. She's had a strong run thus far and deserves some support from those ladies who always vote for the male rock voice. Her voice is edgy, dark, but also spunky.

J: Bubbles

Bubbles is yet to put a foot wrong in the competition, She has been vocally on-point since the start and her personality has endeared her to the viewers. She takes on a variety on genres with ease and if she keeps up the momentum she might very well make it to the Top 5.

5.

R: Bubbles

She's had a great run thus far, and she has proved herself to be very versatile. From her fun and poppy battle with Bryce to her fantastic soulful and jazzy rendition of her Coach Lira's track, she has shown the chops and the personality of a star.

J: Marissa

Karen sure got it wrong in letting Marissa go (but then the judges have been getting it wrong a lot this season). She could be the quintessential rock princess of the season but seems to be lacking public support which could see her fall out of the competition prematurely.

4.

R: Marco

Marco has probably been my favourite surprise this season. He comes off dorky at first sight and then he stuns you with his great falsetto and shocks you even more with a killer Fall Out Boy rendition. With the right songs, he could just do it, but I'm afraid he won't connect with the average viewer. He deserves to be Top 8 in the very least.

J: Tender

Tender is like a ghost in the competition. The only time we see or hear anything from her is when she performs. She has the ability to take any song and make it her own. Her vocals are hauntingly beautiful but she too needs to find some confidence in order to make her performances even more memorable.

3.

R: Tender

Another contestant that has probably been a little under the radar, but her voice shows why she shouldn't be. It's beautiful, soulful, and versatile. She has tons of heart to go with her chops. Her warm vocals gives her the ability to breathe life into a song, she just needs to pick the right one.

J: Marco

Taking one Marco you would never imagine him to have such an amazing singing talent. He takes risks with his song choices and they always pay off. Not everyone will ‘get’ Marco but not everyone has too, He deserves to go all the way in the competition.

2.

R: Sam

Killer audition, killer battle with Armand, strong knockout - she's been good. She has the voice of a contemporary female pop star. Big, versatile, warm, and light. She has the voice and the spark to have a great recording career, but the right material will be key. South Africa needs a pop/rock goddess.

J: Craig

Craig has the full package. He is good looking, confident in his ability and talented as hell. His vocal range is incredible. I would be very happy seeing him, Marco and Sam in the Top 3.

1.

R: Craig

*sings* This is The Voice! Yeah, Craig is one of the best talents any South African reality show has discovered. The real deal. His hauntingly beautiful lower register, his searing, dramatic range, the uniqueness, and cool diction - it's all there. He's also extremely commercial. He'll be the pop star this show needs. Also, I love his taste in music.

J: Sam

I don’t often root for females in talent shows purely because they are usually of the diva variety. Cue Sam, who is gorgeous, feisty and can sing the hell out of any song. She sparkles when she is on stage and her singing ability is nothing short of insane. Sam without a doubt has The Voice and all the other makings of a star!
