The Voice South Africa: Let's Rank Them
What a relief that the Blind Auditions are over! That said, it gives us the perfect opportunity to rank the Top 48 based on their first auditions.
It would just take too long to rank all 48 talents so we will stick to our individual Top 10's (and throw in an honourable mention or two)
Let's not waste any time, here's our Top 10 Blind Auditions for Season 2 of The Voice South Africa.
10.
J: Tender Mavundla
I have been a fan of Tender’s talent for many years but it was her version of Brenda Fassie’s ‘Vulindlela’ that earned her a spot on the Top 10 list.
R: Veronique Laloulette
There is no doubt that she's got the voice - big, technical, powerful and her audition got the audience buzzing. She's a seasoned performer in a very strong team, she'll have to fight to survive. The audition, however, was great.
9.
J: Veronique Laloulette
No Top 10 list would be complete without the lovely Veronique. Her take on the Tina Turner hit ‘River Deep Mountain High’ might have only turned 2 chairs but overall t was a great audition filled with heaps of talent and heart.
R: Josh Ansley
A theatrical rocker is sure to be a big hit amongst the more mature crowd, and this was a rocking performance. He's got a great range, let's see whether he could bring that voice to something more contemporary. He might just do it.
8.
J: Marco Basson
His rendition of Nick Jonas's 'Jealous' was splendid. He is one of the dark horses in the competition and if his stage presence can match his vocals we could see him sticking around till the end.
R: Marco Basson
He may not look it, but his vocal during his performance of Nick Jonas's 'Jealous' was soulful - and a complete surprise. He's got the voice, he just needs the stage presence to round it up. He's a dark horse.
7.
J: Jacqueline Tolken
I have never been a huge Fleetwood Mac fan but Jacqueline’s take on their hit ‘Dreams’ might make a fan out of me yet. The girl has a lot of soul and a gorgeous voice to match.
R: Tender
A fantastic voice to go with her story of redemption, Tender is someone to watch. She's a fighter and her voice shows it. I'm rooting for her to do well in this competition.
6.
J: Bryce MacMillan
No, Bryce did not make the cut just because I think he is hot Reinhardt! He more than did justice to Ne*Yo’s “So Sick” and his offbeat groove sets him apart from the other male contestants.
R: Amanda Faku
Soulful, restrained, and touching. Her performance of 'Ordinary People' was really strong. She's PE's best shot at the title this season. Lira will mould her into a potential winner.
5.
J: Sheldon De St Pern
Sheldon delivered one of the best rock auditions of the season in my opinion. He kept the vocal gymnastics to a minimum and impressed with vocals that oozes downright manly sexiness.
R: Samantha Landers
I'm not sure how far she'll make it considering the strength of Karen's team, but her performance of 'Somewhere Over The Rainbow' was wonderful and dreamlike. She had me firmly in her spell. The challenge for her, though, is standing out amongst the more commanding, bigger voices.
4.
J: Marissa Petzer
Mrs Stillfontein was one of my early favorites and her powerhouse vocals and funky persona earned her a 4-chair turn and the #4 spot on the Top 10 ranking.
R: Armand Joubert
He took on one of the most challenging contemporary pop songs in Ariana Grande's 'Into You' and nailed it. His voice is strong and versatile, and he could be a big threat in this competition. He's a potential pop star.
3.
J: Samantha Landers
Sam is a gem! Her rendition of the timeless classic ‘Somewhere Over The Rainbow’ had me shedding more than just one tear.
R: Marissa Petzer
Karen and Marissa make up my favourite coach and contestant pairing of the season. 'Whole Lotta Love' was a great perfection, and who better to mould a potential rock diva than Karen. Could she take it two steps further than her boyfriend, Almur Marais, and take the title? Possibly.
2.
J: Samantha Leonard
‘Bang Bang’ is not an easy song to pull off but Sam did it with ease. This beauty from Kimberley has a set of pipes on her that could see her taking the title in the end.
R: Craig Lucas
He had me at 'House of The Rising Sun'. Soulful, bluesy, and every shade of wonderful. He's Kahn's only shot at winning this season, and I wouldn't be too surprised if that happens. Craig is the real deal.
1.
J: Craig Lucas
‘The House of the Rising Sun’ has never sounded better. His performance was soulful and just downright brilliant. My crystal ball predicts he could take it all this season.
R: Sam Leonard
This girl screams pop star, but she also has the voice to back it up. Her cover of 'Bang Bang' was a firecracker of an audition. If she can kill a track like that, I bet her versatile voice can take on anything.
Honourable Mentions:
J:
Armand Joubert: The dude has pop star written all over him. He took on a difficult song and just about nailed it. He could prove to be a very worthy contender.
Sonia Mörsner: Her rendition of Nianell's 'Who Painted The Moon Black' was absolutely beautiful. I would love to see what she does in the Battles as she has the potential to be a huge star.
R:
John James: this kid has tons of potential, and he's sure to be a hit with the voting audience. He's 18 and already this good.
Bryce MacMillan: he might not have the biggest voice, but his soulful R&B audition showed me that he might just have a lot more to show. There's potential to be a pop star there.
OK so there you have it - our first ranking of the season.
