The Voice South Africa: Pretty Girls & Handsome Boys
If the previews of tonight's show are anything to go by we are actually in for a good show. I am predicting that, by the end of tonight, I will be less of a skeptic and more of a fully-fledged fan.
Let's get right to the talent!
First up tonight is the very eclectic Christy-Lyn Marais (28) from Bergvliet in Cape Town. She takes to the stage with her harp in tow to perform Simon and Garfunkel’s ‘Scarborough Fair’. Kahn likes the classical tone to her voice and turns. The remaining judges are all surprised to see that Christy was playing the harp while singing!. She joins #TeamKahn and everyone is thrilled.
Craig has a lot to prove, both to his mother and to himself. He hopes to impress the judges by putting his own spin on ‘The House of the Rising Sun’. Kahn turns first. Wow he sure knows how to belt out the song and ends up getting the 4-chair turn. That was probably one of the best auditions we have seen this entire season. Welcome to #TeamKahn
Christopher and Charl are collectively known as Symphony. I’m a big fan of Jason Mraz so I’m hoping these two guys do the song justice. This is making me smile. Come on judges, please turn. Thank you Kahn!!!! Chris is definitely the stronger of the two but they harmonize beautifully together. I’m excited to see what Kahn can do with these 2 brothers!
Franki is up next. He hails from Cape Town and has brought his 2 favorite ladies with him for support. He has extensive experience in the music industry and one can’t help but wonder why he needs a platform like The Voice if he has already enjoyed chart-topping success. Ok well that was surprising. I thought he would have received at least one turn. Better luck next time Franki!
Spha is a full-time musician who also does voice-over work. She puts a glorious jazzy spin on Aretha Franklin’s ‘Say A Little Prayer’. She has a lovely warm tone to her voice. Kahn is very turn-happy tonight. Lira turns as well. She chooses Lira…. No surprise there.
Caroline is a glorified housewife looking to break into the music industry, This pretty girl is the wife of Springbok rugby player Heinrich Brüssow and flew all the way from Japan for her audition. She hopes to impress with Céline Dion’s ‘Loved Me Back to Life’. She has a really powerful voice. Bobby turns and clearly likes what he sees. Caroline joins his team and everyone, including Heinrich, seems happy.
It is do or die time for the pint-sized Sarah. The performance is sweet but failed to impress both me and the judges. Sorry Sarah.
Well hello Bryce. Nice to see a bit of eye candy on the show again. He nails Ne*Yo’s 'So Sick' and Lira spins in her chair. It is not often that I say someone is radio-ready but this guy is radio ready. I’m hoping to see a lot more of him in the competition.
Andre is a boytjie from the Cape who sounds like Lance James. He is very good but its all a bit weird. No one turns. Don’t think South Africa is ready for this yet.
It is time for the pimp spot again and tonight it belong to the sultry Samantha from Kimberly. The guys are going to love this girl. Her dad is very emotional. Will she pull off Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj’s smash hit 'Bang Bang'? This is really, really good! What a well-deserved 4-chair turn. The judges beg and plead but Sam has her heart set on one judge only and joins #TeamKaren.
Next week sees the last of the Blind Auditions as the judges fill the remaining spots on their teams.
Tonight’s talent was promising and I have regained some excitement for the impending Battles.
Who was your favorite of the night? Which judge do you think has the strongest team thus far? Voice off in the comments section!
