Hot Property: Jono Johansen
Time sure flies when you are having fun (or being mesmerized by the haunting voice of Jono Johansen it seems). It has been a year since Jono graced our screens as a contestant on the first season of The Voice South Africa and what a year it has been for this phenomenally talented guy.
When it was announced in July last year that Jono clinched a recording deal from Universal Music South Africa I just about expired from hysteria! Nothing makes me happier than seeing good things happen to good people and no one was more deserving of this good fortune than Jono himself.
Jono’s debut single ‘Cracks in the Pavement’ was released on 22 July 2016 and performed well on the local iTunes charts. Written by Jono himself together with UCT peer Mandie Venter the song lived up to every expectation I ever had of him. His vocal range is absolutely insane to the point where one can’t help but be transformed into a world of sheer wonder. Producer Bubele Booi did a stellar job infusing the song with an incredible RnB-pop groove, showcasing all his strengths and insuring that the song truly did Jono's talent justice.
The music video to ‘Cracks in the Pavement’ was subsequently released on 3 August 2016 and is a hauntingly beautiful accompaniment to a song which, by this time, had become a firm fan-favorite. Definitely not lacking in the looks department, Jono soon had many a lady swooning thanks to the brooding character portrayed by him in the video.
If ‘Cracks’ was not enough to give you multiple eargasms then Jono’s duet ‘What If’ with Kelly Khumalo is sure to send you over the edge! The song which features on Khumalo’s new album, My Truth, will render you speechless amidst an emotional awakening. This track has award-winning potential and is just more confirmation that Johansen is set for international stardom.
After his exit from The Voice South Africa, Jono has performed all over South Africa including at venues in Cape Town, Durban and Bloemfontein. He has featured on both Good Hope FM and Radio 702 and appeared on the highly acclaimed Expresso Morning Show on SABC3.
At only 20 years old Jono has already displayed a maturity beyond his years and has cemented himself as a well-respected force in the South African music industry. The sky is the limit for this young home-grown talent and I predict that he will have an array of awards adorning his mantelpiece in the next couple of years!
