The Voice South Africa: Where Were The Boys?
Can the Blind Auditions end already? Bring on the Battles! I am more than ready for a bit of excitement!
Please excuse the pessimism but I am still waiting on a performance that will render me speechless for the correct reasons. Could tonight be the night? Can we possibly see a performance so great that even the biggest skeptics (myself included) will be silenced?
Let's see!
Sonia is 24 years old and hails from Vereeniging. She grew up in a musical family and gives music the credit for getting her through some very difficult times in her life. She hopes to impress the judges with Nianell’s ‘Who Painted The Moon Black’. She has a truly beautiful voice, filled with emotion. Kahn turns first. Lira seems to be crying and turns at the same time as Karen. The crowd goes crazy. The judges shower her with praise and Sonia joins #TeamKahn.
Tristan is from Jeffrey’s Bay and enjoys busking. I don’t quite know what to make of this performance. He has a pleasant enough voice but it all seems to lack inspiration. No chairs turn. I’m not surprised.
EMMAAAAAAAA. I’m already a huge fan of this girl and I hope she will make an impact on the judges. How sweet is the love Emma and her little sister have for each other? She hopes to impress with her take on 'Hey There Delilah'. Karen turns almost right away. Emma fumbles with the words but somewhat regains her composure. No man Emma you have me in tears as well now! This is one audition that we won’t forget anytime soon! Emma joins #TeamKaren
Jean brought no support with to his audition. He looks like a pop-star and has a sweet voice although he might be better suited to a boy band. He wobbles throughout his performance. Bobby turns very fast. No one else turns. Jean joins #TeamBobby
Tuin is 29 years old and is a full-time musician. She is the lead singer in a band and seems to be a super-cool chick. I love that she vows to stay loyal to her band after the competition. She is a huge Karen Zoid fan and I bet that would be where she will be heading should Karen turn her chair. She has an interesting voice but I don’t think this is the right platform for her. No chairs turn. Bye Tuin.
Meggan’s mom listened to Pink Floyd while she was pregnant with her. This rock chick from Langebaan is hoping to impress the judges with a KT Tunstall hit. This girl has tons of attitude but her voice seems to fall flat in places. Bobby literally turns at the last second and Meggan joins his team.
Adelia is up next. She brought her mom and her sister along for moral support. LOVE that she took a risk with her song choice ,Meghan Trainor's 'Shake It Out'. Come on judges, you have turned for a lot worse! Sadly no turns and Adelia is left wanting.
Monique is from Cape Town and has a long list of music-related credentials. Her twin sister died in a car accident years ago. It is obvious that she is an accomplished vocalist. Her voice is crystal clear and she hits the high notes with ease. That said - the performance feels somewhat dated. Kahn hears potential and hits his buzzer. Welcome to #TeamKahn Monique!
Tonight the pimp spot belongs to stage performer Josh. He belts out AC/DC’s ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ and gets a 4-chair turn. I’m not going to take anything away from his immense talent but I’m not convinced yet that he is radio-ready as he oozes musical theatre. After the usual groveling from the judges Josh joins #TeamBobby and with that we call it a night.
I am jumping for joy as tonight's show was definitely a step up from the last couple of weeks! What is even more exciting is the fact that the girls seem to be giving the boys a run for their money this year!
Have you spotted the winner yet? What was your take on tonight's show?
Remember to tune in to Mnet Channel 101 next Sunday at 17:30 as the judges continue to fight for the most talented vocalists in the country!
