The Voice South Africa: It's a Girl's World

Is it Sunday already? It feels like yesterday that we watched the likes of Chadwick and Jacqueline survive the Blind Auditions.

Perhaps the impending full moon has left me feeling menopausal but I am still not as impressed by the talent as I was last year. Time to clear my mind and watch the show with an open mind and a glass of wine on standby.

First up is the pretty and bubbly Jeanne-Mari.

The blue-eyed beauty is a teacher by profession and hopes to wow the judges with an emotional performance. She has a crystal-clear voice and delivers with a solid rendition of 'I Will Always Love You', hitting the high notes with ease. Lira Turns, Bobby turns. Jeanne-Mari joins #TeamBobby

Next to take to the stage is 24-year old Zikhona.

This clever girl is into computer science as well as being very passionate about music. She admits to being nervous but won’t let it get the better of her. Her song choice, Asa’s ‘Jailer’ showcased her beautiful, rich tone. Kahn turns fairly fast and that is exactly where Zikhona is headed - #Teamkahn

Up next are the brother/sister duo known as The Massers. They impress with Fleetwood Mac ‘s ‘Landslide’. I’m not usually a fan of duos on The Voice but these two have a nice vibe to them. Their harmonies are amazing. Karen turns first. Kahn turns. Kahn and Karen both deliver a sales pitch. The Massers join #TeamKaren

Family man Pierre (31)has received a SAMA nomination for Best Afrikaans Pop Album. Sadly I can’t see him progressing very far in the competition. The entire performance was lacking any form of emotion. No turns – as expected.

Armand (21) looks the part of a recording artist. His parents are his biggest supporters. Karen spins her chair around. He has a nice pop voice and his stage presence is refreshing. Lira turns. He sure got the crowd going with his take on Ariana Grande’s ‘Into You’. All 4 judges ended up turning. Karen thinks he is pretty and Armand decides to join her team.

Maya (33) is a music teacher and full-time musician. She resides in Cape Town but has lived all over the world. I love the song but the performance did not leave me impressed. There was just too much vocal gymnastics. She is an entertainer but not a vocalist. No chairs turn. Bye bye Maya,

Andrew is 37 years old and used to be a worship leader. 37 years old. Music has formed large part of his healing process. He attempts to wow the judges with his take on the All 4 One classic ‘I Can Love You Like That’. The guy has a lot of soul. Kahn turns his chair. Lira turns at the last second. Andrew joins #TeamLira

Next up Veronique tries her hand at another talent show. She was one of my favorites during Season 3 of Idols South Africa. She has aged very well, turning into a classical beauty. She is now a doting mommy to a gorgeous little boy. It is hard to believe that she has been performing professionally for 21 years. Veronique still has powerhouse vocals and delivers with the Tina Turner hit ‘River Deep, Mountain High’ Lira and Karen turn at the same time. Could this finally be her time to truly shine? V joins #TeamKaren

Tonight’s pimp spot belongs to Amanda from PE. PE sure has a lot of singers called Amanda. Judging by the way the judges spun their chairs around she is the next Adele. The girl is talented and has a good voice but I did not hear the same thing the judges did. All 4 the judges are pleading for Amanda to join their teams. Amanda goes for the obvious and joins #TeamLira

And on that note tonight's show comes to an end. Why am I still feeling unsatisfied? Why does it feel like we are force-fed irrelevant interviews and ad breaks when we should be spoiled with performances?

For me the girls sang circles around the guys tonight. Who was your favorite? Did Amanda leave you breathless or was Armand the one to tug at your heart strings?

Tune in next Sunday for another round of Blind Auditions on The Voice South Africa!
