The Voice South Africa: Love Me Tender, Love Me True
It feels like we waited years for Season 2 of The Voice South Africa to premiere and here we are on Episode 3 already.
After last week's somewhat lacklustre episode we can only but hope for a show overflowing with remarkable talent tonight.
Opening tonight’s show is Anchen with her take on Lukas Graham’s ‘7 Years’. The girl is sugary-sweet with an unusual accent. Both mom and boyfriend are very supportive. Her vocals are pretty good. I am pleasantly surprised. Bobby waits till the very last second to turn his chair but better late than never eh? Anchen joins #TeamBobby
Next up is 35-year old Tender. I LOVED this girl on Idols and was pretty bummed when she didn’t make it further in the competition. She renders a super-solid rendition of Brenda Fassie’s ‘Vulindlela’. All these years later and this girl still gives me goose bumps. Kahn, Bobby and Lira turn and Tender goes for the obvious and joins #TeamLira
Lindokuhle hails from Pietermaritzburg and hopes to impress with Sipho Hotstix Mabuse's classic ‘Burn Out’. He has a smooth, soulful voice and seems like a very likeable guy. I expected more judges to turn but in the end one is enough and Lindo joins #TeamKaren
Jacqueline looks ready for the spotlight and delivers with the Fleetwood Mac classic ‘Dreams’. She has extraordinary vocal control and a beautiful tone which has all four judges turning their chairs. Jacqui does the noble thing and goes with the judge who turned first – Lira.
No episode of The Voice will be complete without a bite of token eye-candy and tonight’s dish came served in the form of 19-year old Chadwick from Durban. He has a beautiful voice and impresses with a super-cool cover of Matthew Mole's 'Autumn'. Lira and Bobby spin their chairs around and (hooray) Chadwick chooses to join #TeamBobby
Fatman takes to the stage next and I would be lying if I said i did not have my reservations about him. WOW, what a voice! 'Walking in Memphis' has not sounded this good in many a singing competition! This guy is really interesting and I am very chuffed that two judges turned their chairs. Bobby grovels but Fatman picks Kahn!
24-Year old Orali is very vibey and I would love to be her friend - she just seems THAT cool! She is not pitch-perfect but she does have a strong voice with a pleasant little growl in it. Perhaps 'Weekend Special' was just not the right song for her as no chairs turn. Bye bye Orali. Hope to see you again soon.
The pimp spot of the night belongs Marco who plays in a church band and is an engineer by trade. He is super quirky and shocks my socks off with a rock-solid rendition of the Nick Jonas hit 'Jealous' . It is no surprise when all four judges hit their buzzers and turn their chairs. Personally I would have paired Marco with Kahn but he opts for Bobby and that is also OK.
So that's a wrap folks! I'm yet to see a Richard or Jono emerge this season but all hope is not lost.
The contestants are, for the most part, applaudable but too much viewing time is wasted on bothersome ad breaks and trying interviews. Show us the talent already!
Have you spotted the winner yet? Who do you think was the highlight of tonight's show? Tune in next week as the hunt for the successor to Richard Stirton's crown continues.
