Hot Property: Garth Taylor

I have been a huge fan of Garth Taylor for as long as I can remember. The handsome guy with the mesmerizing blue eyes had me singing along to his songs from the very first time i heard 'Why' on radio more than 15 years ago.

Garth is one of those artists that, when he sings. it feels like every lyric was written especially for you. He is considered one of South Africa's most seasoned performers and deservedly so as he has been producing music of an international standard for many many years.

I recently had the chance to chat to Garth and after I got my fan-girling under control we got down to business.

It has been 18 years since 'Why' became a chart-topping hit. How do you remember the day when you first heard your music played on radio?

I remember waiting for ages that day and when it eventually came on, i couldn’t dial everyone fast enough to tell them!

You were personally picked by Sir Richard Branson to perform at his son's wedding. What did it mean to you as an artist to have such an honor bestowed upon you.

In a very difficult industry, these are the moments that make it worthwhile. I was honored and humbled.

Apart from being one of SA's most accomplished musicians you are also one of Mzansi's hottest male celebs. Have you had any uncomfortable run-ins with a female fan you'd like to share with us?

Hot? Now you tell me!

I’m pretty comfortable with my supporters so if someone was being sinister, I probably didn’t notice ! Haha

You have shared the stage with international icons such as Simply Red, Shaggy and Brian McKnight. Who is the one international you would love to share a stage with in future?

Bruno Mars !!!

Besides your killer vocals and genius song-writing skills you are also a phenomenal multi-instrumentalist. Of all the instruments you play which was the most difficult to master?

Wow all these compliments are making me shy! The most difficult for me would be drums, because it requires the most co-ordination.

You are known as an activist in the fight against women and child abuse. Are there any other causes close to your heart?

Definitely the CANSA foundation or any research into a cure for cancer like the Little Fighters Trust

When you are not on stage performing or in studio recording you are also a bit of a fitness fanatic. How do you find the time to balance all your passions?

That’s a great question. How do I?

How have you evolved as an artist since the release of your first album?

I’d say I’ve learnt a lot about myself musically and I’ve had to do a lot of growing up. This industry is tough and requires tenacity. I’ve learnt not to be sensitive about criticism and to accept that hard work is the only way forward.

Have you ever considered leaving sunny South Africa to seek greener pastures (and greater international fame) abroad?

I definitely have but not necessarily for greener pastures, I’d say it’s more for the experience. Having travelled to Asia, Europe and Australia to perform, I’ve learnt a lot and returned a wiser artist.

If you could dedicate one of your songs to your fans which one will it be and why?

Surely the first one I released,"Why" that is the very first hit and the one that the fans made famous.
