The Voice South Africa: Jono Johansen

If you are a fan of world-class music then I suggest you memorize the name Jonathan Johansen right away.

Jono, as he is affectionately known, is a 2-times world champion chorister who hails from Durban and is currently competing on the first season of The Voice South Africa. He impressed judges and viewers alike with his soulful rendition of Sam Smith’s ‘Lay Me Down’ during his Blind Audition on the show and recently ran away with his battle against Lunique to advance to the next stage of the competition.

I recently had the honour of chatting to Jono about everything from his musical influences to his rapid increase in female attention. Here’s what he had to say:

Music is obviously your vice. Do you have any other passions apart from singing?

Well I am passionate about film and acting, as well as fitness, I enjoy gym, it's a stress reliever for me.

Many people find it extremely hard to believe that you are only 18 years old. Would you say you have an ‘old soul’?

Well I am actually 19 years old now. I do believe that I have an older soul, this is probably because I have spent most of my life around older people. But I do still love to have fun!

If you had to choose a stage name for yourself, what would it be?

I have no idea! Maybe like "Jay" or something of the sorts.

I for one fell in love with your voice when I first saw you on Idols SA a couple of years ago. How have you evolved as an artist since then?

Haha thank you! I believe that my voice has changed a lot since Idols. Firstly, my range is much bigger, secondly I believe I have a richer tone than back then. Thirdly, I am a lot more settled in my musical identity, I know who I am as a musician and I know where I want to go, I didn't have this when I was on Idols. I also believe I am a lot more mature, and have experienced quite a bit more which allows me to translate that into my music.

Who has been your greatest musical inspiration growing up?

Ooh that can't be narrowed down to one! Growing up, I was exposed to all genres of music, I believe that any musician should absorb and learn from as many different artists as possible, for example a few of my main influences are Queen, Beyonce, Journey, Adam Lambert, Adele, Muse, and many many more.

If you could collaborate with just one local or international artist who would it be and why?

I think locally I would definitely go for Lira, she is absolutely AMAZING! Internationally, I would love to with either Adele, or Sam Smith.

You have grown up to be quite a hunk. Do you find yourself on the receiving end of a lot more female attention now that you are TV?

Why thank you! I have actually received a fair share of female attention. Unfortunately for them, I am in a beautiful, loving and stable relationship with a beautiful woman named Michaela.

What is your favorite track to listen to right now?

My favourite track to listen to at the moment is Jealous, by Labyrinth.

How does the vibe on The Voice differ from that of Idols SA?

The vibe is completely different, as they are two very different shows. On The Voice you are focused on as an artist, and the coaches are there to mentor and work with the talent one-on-one, which is very exciting.

Your singing career does not work out for you and you are forced to become a Superhero. What super power do you choose?

Definitely super strength!
