The Voice South Africa: Well Hello Chloe Clark
With this being the last opportunity for the judges to fill the remaining spots on their teams I figured the best talent was saved for last. Clearly not! Of all the episodes we have watched thus far this was by far the most disappointing.
First up is Meyrand Roux. At first glance I didn’t have high hopes for him. He has a deep, gruff voice - Not what I expected! Lira turns. Meyrand joins her team.
Thapelo Lekoane is up next singing Tracy Chapman’s ‘Fast Car’. She has a beautiful tone to her voice. This girl has something special about her! Karen hits her buzzers and is in tears. Bobby also turns. Thapelo joins #TeamKaren
Having had the pleasure to previously interview Chloe Clark I know she is so much more than just a pretty face. She is hoping for Lira to turn. Her take on Beyonce’s ‘Single Ladies’ displays some real artistry. Kahn turns. Bobby turns. Chloe chooses Kahn.
Tshegofatso Makhafola’s name may be a mouthful but his voice is pretty astounding. He seems like a really nice guy. It’s safe to say that all the judges were under the impression that they were listening to a woman perform. Lira turns first and couldn’t hide her surprise. Kahn, Bobby and Karen all end up hitting their buzzers as well. Tshego joins #TeamLira
Next up are the Bubu twins. Pilani and Ezile might look the same but they differ like night and day. They are extremely likable. Sadly neither of them manage to impress the judges enough to make it onto a team. Bye bye girls.
Nolene Olivier is a pretty Afrikaner meisie with an infectious laugh. She is definitely one of the stronger Afrikaans vocalists we have seen. Kahn turns first followed by Bobby. This should be a no-brainer for Nolene – She joins #TeamBobby
James Freedom has a super-cool name and hails from Ballito. He has a lovely rasp to his voice. I really like him. Kahn also likes him and James becomes the final member of #TeamKahn.
Zoe Modiga is classically trained and is a Pietermaritzburg native. She displays some lovely phrasing during her rendition of ‘Take Me to Church’. Karen turns almost immediately but Zoe opts for Lira in the end.
The final contestant (who is obviously heading for #TeamKaren) is Alicia-Ann du Plessis. She has a big voice and reminds me strongly of Mark Haze. Surprise Surpise – Karen hits her buzzer and Alicia-Ann fills that last remaining spot on her team.
Were you as disappointed as I was by last night’s show? Who were your favorites?
Next week the Battles commence and I am keen to see how the judges will pair off their contestants.
Tune in to Mnet Channel 101 next Sunday to see who will make it through to the live shows.
