The Voice South Africa: Jono Takes The Night
After seeing a glimpse of a young artist I am already a huge fan of at the end of last week’s episode I was more than anticipating last night’s episode.
I look forward to seeing Bobby more and more every week. His playfulness is absolutely contagious and seems to rub off on the other judges more and more as the season progresses.
Enough about Bobby though. It was a satisfying show which ended in a thoroughly enjoyable eargasm courtesy of Jonathan Johansen but more about that towards the end of the review.
First up is Blaque Harmony - a duo with a distinct ‘Clah of the Choirs’ feel to them. They take on Zahara’s ‘Loliwe’ and seem to be a perfect match for Lira. They harmonize beautifully. All the judges except Lira turns. After brief deliberation Black Harmony joins #TeamKaren
Almur Marais is accompanied by his mom and his aunt. He dreams to be on Karen’s team. He has a nice voice but I don’t know if this was a winning performance. Perhaps with some guidance he could truly blossom? Only Karen hits her buzzer but Almur is ecstatic. Another member for #TeamKaren
Shen Winberg’s early exit from Idols a couple of years back had people wanting to boycott the show. He is as wholesome as ever – wanting to change the world. I wish his cheerleaders would have given him the opportunity to speak for himself. He wants to be on Lira’s team. He has a good voice. Lira does not turn and he ends up on #TeamKahn
I will never forget Lyle Volkwyn’s run on High School Musical: Spotlight South Africa all those years back. He has changed a lot and looks superb. I’m not so sure about this song choice though. It does not showcase his voice at all. Lyle joins #TeamBobby
Sumare van Schalkwyk performs with her mother. She takes a huge risk with an Afrikaans song. She has a lovely tone to her voice but the song makes her seem outdated. Bobby sees potential and hits his buzzer, gaining another team member.
Dave Stark is up next. His wife Zola has come along to support. He has a sweet voice with a nice jazzy tone to it. No chairs turn. Dave is sent packing.
Jade Mcdonald has ‘Moulin Rouge’ written all over her. She is a spunky blonde with a good, albeit somewhat affected, voice. She completely changed Katy Perry’s ‘I Kissed a Girl’ and has Kahn and Bobby hitting their buzzers. After the customary sales pitches she opts for Kahn.
Busisiwe Mutlaka reminds me strongly of Idols Alumni Sindi Nene. She is an interesting girl and can sure belt out the notes. It’s no surprise that she joins #TeamLira
No episode of The Voice South Africa is complete without at least one WTF moment. Lee Scott is quite the hunk and has a pretty good voice to boot. I would have turned my chair without (obviously) even knowing what he looks like. No one turns. WTF indeed. Bobby and Karen are both full of regrets. Too late judges, you messed up with this one!
The pimp spot of the night belongs to none other than Jono Johansen. I’m so excited that I almost forget to breathe. Jono is even better than I remember. This is pure class! All 4 chairs spin around at a rapid rate! I would have liked for him to go with Kahn but can understand why he chose to be on #TeamLira. My night is made!
Who were your favorites of the night? tune in next week as the judges seek to fill the last remaining spots on the teams!
