The Voice South Africa: Tears Aplenty
Although last night’s show started and ended on a high note everything in between was pretty much a hot mess.
Would now be a good time to start petitioning for a new presenter for Season 2?
Bobby is by far the most entertaining of the judges and is also the only one to evoke any emotion from me. Come on judges – we want some Levine-Shelton chemistry from you!
First up is singer, actress and comedian Tracey-Lee Oliver. She belts out a solid performance of ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’. She has a beautiful, big voice and doesn’t need to focus on her back story quite so much. I figured Lira would be her obvious choice but she picks Karen!
Stan Kruger is up next. His mom and dad were both in a band in the 70’s. I quite like him. Here comes the first WTF moment of the evening. No one turns. Stan goes home.
Zoleka ‘Zoe’ Mtila is up next. She is super confident but fails to get the desired response from the judges. Bobby turns with literally a split-second to go. Zoleka joins #TeamBobby
Roan van As’s dream coach is Karen. He sings his heart out but all the chairs remain unturned. I expected at least one judge to hit the buzzer. Sorry Roan!
The next contestant to take to the stage is the very colourful Lunique. She puts an interesting spin on the Evanescence anthem ‘Bring Me To Life’. I was fearful that another good talent would be sent home but Lira turns and gains another team member.
Chris Werge is clearly not one to shy away from risks as he tries to impress with Lorde’s ‘Royals’. He was hoping for Bobby to turn and he gets his wish. Bobby’s team is growing in leaps and bounds tonight.
Can Justin Swallow live up to his rock-star name? His rendition of ‘Free Falling’ did not give me any goosebumps but he clearly has a good voice. Bobby and Kahn both turn and Justin opts for the latter.
Kim Collins is a feisty lady and her cover of ‘Mercy’ showcases her sexy voice. I once again expected more chairs to turn. Bobby comes to Kim’s rescue and gains yet another team member!
Lara Gear is only 19 years old but is talented well beyond her age. This is one of my favorite female voices thus far. She join #TeamKahn - this is a good match!
Tonight’s well-deserved pimp spot belongs to Vernon Barnard. There is no need to focus on his disability as his voice alone was enough to render me speechless. Bobby’s vulnerability made for a beautiful moment and I loved how the other judges encouraged Vernon to pick Bobby even though also obviously wanted him on their teams.
I can’t wait for next week’s episode as I caught a glimpse of Idols alumni Jonathan Johansen in the episode preview. I don’t expect anything less than 4 chair-turns for this immensely talented young man!
Tune in next week to see whether great talent or disaster await!
