The Voice South Africa: Bobby Strikes Gold
I can’t believe we are into Week 4 of The Voice South Africa already! In next to no time the winner will be crowned and we will once again be forced to watch 5-year old reruns of pointless American shows.
Tonight sure was a step up from last week. Even Lira was more palatable. Bobby glowed like a shiny new toy car and Karen and Kahn were on top of their game as well.
First up is South African Youth Choir alumni Francis Bowers. His rendition of ‘Skyfall’ was solid and he has a pretty good voice. Will he be a commercial success? I don’t know. Kahn gains another team member.
Next we see a guy/girl duo who go by the stage name of Purple Cry. Individually they would have stood a better chance as the judges are confused by what they hear. They are pretty damn good. No chairs turn though . This is the end of the road for them.
Sofaya immediately seems like the perfect candidate for #TeamLira. She is all diva. There is no lack in confidence here. All 4 the judges want her but Lira wants her more. Sofaya opts for Karen. I did not see that one coming!
Louwrens Erasmus takes to the stage next. He reminds strongly of a modern-day Koos Kombuis. He has such a lovely tone to his voice but this is not the correct platform for him. No one turns. Louwrens goes home.
Lendel Moonsamy had a pretty good run on Idols way back when Jason Hartman won. He tries his hand at the Goo Goo Dolls anthem ‘Iris’. He has grown tremendously has an artist. I expected more chairs to turn. Lendel joins #TeamLira.
Sibongile Sibeko comes from a Gospel background and it shows. There is talent there but her performance is inconsistent and she sounds out of breath. Only Karen turns and Sibongile joins her team.
Next up is Nadine Sisam who focuses a lot on her own self-worth. She takes to the stage with Rihanna’s ‘Stay’. Nadine has a pretty voice and looks the part. Her mom suggested she should pick Karen and that is exactly where she is headed.
William Wolf hails from Bloemfontein and has worked with Heinz Winckler and Andriette Norman. He sings ‘Lighthouse’ by Elvis Blue. His adorable family looks on. Only Lira turns at the last moment and William joins her team.
Zaretha Duvenage is next. Her twist on ‘Lisa se Klavier’ leaves Kahn looking highly intrigued. The girl is good. Karen turns and so does Kahn. Zaretha picks Karen. This is a good match!
Could Monique Filander be another shoo-in for #TeamLira. Evidently not as no chairs turn after her more than adequate performance. Weaker contestants ahead of her got more from the judges. Poor Monique is left stranded.
Tonight’s pimp spot belongs to hunky Gavin Edwards who has a very refreshing and realistic take on the music industry and life in general. His version of ‘Say Something’ has a nice rock edge to it. I thought he would have been the perfect candidate for #TeamKahn but Kahn does not hit his buzzer. The other 3 judges render their sales pitches and Gavin opts for Bobby in the end. Could Bobby have gained a potential winner on his team?
What did you think of last night’s show? Have you spotted the winner yet?
Tune in next week as the search for the best voice in South Africa continues on Mnet Channel 101 at 17:30.
