American Idol XV: All Hail Jenna Renae

Last week we were promised that the best talent is yet to be seen and although I wouldn’t say that it was the best audition episode in American Idol history it was definitely a step up from the barely palatable performances we have had to endure to date.

We revisited a number of cities and get to see some of the contestants who auditioned at the busses.

Sadly, we also got to see more of Clay Aiken who once again fouled the entire show with his feeble attempts at humor.

Again, joke contestants and montages. Joke is on you though American Idol because we have become immune to those. Let us rather focus on the 7 contestants who sung their way into Hollywood Week:

Miranda “Poh” Scott - “Fairytale

Miranda is the sister of last season’s very melodramatic Shi Scott. She has a pleasant rasp to her voice but tends to be a bit screechy. She does not have much faith in her own abilities. The judges note that she has more swag than her sister. Ouch. 3 Yes’s sees her jetting off to Hollywood.

Adam Lasher - “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”

Adam is Carlos Santana’s nephew. I love his new clean-shaven look. His up-tempo rendition of the Bob Dylan classic is interesting and points to his creativity. One can’t help but wonder how versatile he will prove to be. The judges like him and send him on his way with 3 Yes’s.

Amelia Eisenhauer - “Many Rivers to Cross”

The pretty 15-year old redhead plays the fiddle and has a voice that is hauntingly beautiful. She delivers a performance that, although slightly out of tune in places, displays a maturity and musicality well beyond her years. I want to hear more of this girl. No surprise when she gets 3 Yes’s and her Golden Ticket.

Joy Dove - “Jambalaya”

Joy has a big, loud voice but seemingly not much else to offer. The Energizer Bunny’s got nothing on her. This is all a bit much. She does have a pretty voice but I don’t think she will see the end of Hollywood Week.

Mackenzie Bourg – “Judges’ Song Medley”

He was part of Cee Lo’s team on season 3 of The Voice. He reminds strongly of Kris Allen. Mackenzie oozes creativity which is displayed in his clever song choice. He has a lovely tone to his voice but I want more volume. The judges like him and I think the voters will too should he make it that far in the competition.

Emily Brooke - “Careless”

16-year old Emily is your cookie –cutter talent show winner. She is a pretty country singer with a beautiful voice and tons of confidence. My prediction is that she will make it very far in the competition this time around (yes, she is a repeat offender). The judges agree and she is given her Golden Ticket.

Jenna Renae - “She Don’t Love You”

One of my favourite auditions this season! Jenna offers a beautiful, soulful audition from behind the piano. I think she is capable of more than Country. I’m excited to see what more she can do but fear that she is at a slight disadvantage due to the fact that she has only her talent to rely on – no soppy backstories for this girl! A very well deserved 3 Yes’s!

Tomorrow we see the last American Idol auditions EVER!

Tune in!
