American Idol XV: Philadelphia Disappoints

What the heck just happened? In all of Idols history this must have been the most uninspiring and underwhelming audition instalment ever!

Yes, there were a couple of standouts but overall the entire episode was reminiscent of a visit to the dentist.

Was this really the best Philadelphia had to offer? Am I the only one who felt like the sob stories and the prank auditions were in the spotlight more than the actual talent?

Clay Aiken makes a guest appearance but it has none of the spontaneity seen last week. He plays Idol Trivia with a guy who turns out to be a joke contestant. What a waste of time!

Out of fear for this becoming a full-blown rant I will now move on to the highlights of the evening, the 6 hopefuls who received their Golden Tickets and are on their way to Hollywood Week.

Sara Sturm - “Lips Are Moving”

She rambles off a story about eggshells. Her outfit distracts from her singing. She is cute and somewhat spunky with a pleasant voice. The judges like her and she is presented with a golden Ticket for her efforts.

Isaac Cole - “Love Like Crazy”

Isaac seems like a sweet kid but in all honesty he is out of his depth here. His Southern twang is undoubtedly fabricated because he is not from the South. Keith points out that he’s not ready yet to which Isaac replies that the judges said the same about Clark Beckham (Clark didn’t win and neither will Isaac). 3 Yes’s nonetheless and off to Hollywood he goes.

John Arthur Greene - “Somebody Like You”

How’s accidently killing your brother with a loaded gun while playing cops and robbers for a backstory? John is a Broadway actor and I can see him being a very successful stage performer. His performance was very affected and although he is a decent singer I am not convinced that Idols is the right platform for him.

Gianna Isabella - “House of the Rising Sun”

I really like Gianna and it has nothing to do with the fact that her mom is Brenda K. Starr. The girl has a big voice but doesn’t possess that ‘diva feel’ I so dislike. I think she could be a contender if she irons out the minor breathing problems encountered during the audition. Mom joins the judges in voting. Yes’s all around and Gianna is sent on her way to Hollywood.

Harrison Cohen - “No Time”

Harrison’s grandpa is a hoot! He dishes out dating advice and checks out the ladies in the holding room. Lots of talk about dating and girlfriends ensue. When Harrison finally gets to sing he offers a fairly good rendition of an original song. The tune is catchy but the shtick is overwhelming. I can picture Harrison in a boy band. He gets 3 Yes’s. Grandpa is delighted.

Jenn Blosil - “Radioactive”

One of my favourite songs (be sure to check out Nick Fradiani Sr’s cover of it here – yes talent runs in the family). This is without a doubt the performance of the night. I love the weird contestants and Jenn is no different. The performance is rock solid. 3 Yes’s. Yay.

I have an inkling that the producers withheld better auditions than those we got to see. Are they staging a ‘Big Reveal’ at Hollywood Week in an attempt to boost ratings?

Tomorrow night we head over to Denver & Little Rock in the search of the next American Idol
