Idols SA: And The Winner Is... Somizi’s Hair (Not Really)
Another season, another dude.
You guessed it, Karabo Mogane is the winner of the 11th season of Idols SA after beating Mmatema Moremi in a fun and over the top grand finale last night.
Over 16 million votes were cast for the Top 2, but the end result was always going to be inevitable.
The night featured three very good duets, but it was Somizi who stole the show with a crazy little hair piece and a choreographed dance number that blew the roof off the building. Hey, it might even have been the gayest grand finale of a singing competition show ever, and both Adam Lambert and Clay Aiken have featured in their own American Idol finales. But what fun.
Mmatema got to perform a soulful duet with MiCasa’s J’Something while Karabo teamed up with the legendary Judith Sephuma for a performance of George Michael and Aretha Franklin’s “I Knew You Were Waiting”, two duets that showcased just how good the Top 2 is. Their worth was further cemented when Karabo and Mmatema joined forces to cover Beyonce’s fitting “I Was Here”. It was a great vocal performance from both, and a great way of getting to the results. With finalists like them, it’s easy to see why this season garned 79 million votes (That, and the 300 free votes every number gets every week).
Last season’s winner Vincent Bones returned to performe his new single, featuring Kwesta. Kwesta might be more successful, but his parts in the track were mostly inaudible and just plain shitty. At least Bones still sounds good? Not a bad return to the Idols stage, but it’s always better to come back with a hint of success.
Will Karabo be able to forge himself a big career, and unlike Musa and Bones, return to the Idols stage a household name? Let’s hope so. He deserves it.
Come back for season 12 next year when we’ll find out the burning answer to that question, but more importantly, come back to find out which guy will be crowned the season 12 winner.
What did you think of the grand finale? Did it live up to the hype?
