Power Couple SA Recap: Holiday Inn

Last night’s episode of Power Couple SA was fun for everyone involved. Two hilarious and pretty fun challenges capped off with big chunks of money on the line. Fun, right? It was fun and easy like a nice couples retreat or a paid for beach holiday.

Yes, those challenges were way too easy. The only thing differentiating couples were the amounts of money they wagered on their partners. The couple currently occupying last position on the leader board? 150k. That alone means every couple completed both challenges. It has to be tougher than this at this stage of the competition.

A show titled Power Couple cannot find the best couple with challenges like that. It’s impossible. It pushes no one. The only couple who possibly learned something during last night’s episode was Dean and Crystal. While the episode was fun, no doubt about it, it was way too easy.

First up was the guys challenge.

The challenge required the guys – dressed in full super hero gear, complete with a cape and some bright red spandex – to rescue their “damsels in distress”. The girls were tied up and suspended above a pit of snakes while the guys had to soar through tree tops on a set of zip-lines in order to gather four keys which would ultimately unlock their chained up “power shield”, and rescue their ladies by blocking the entrance to the snake pit. Once the guys landed at the snake pit, the guys had 2 minutes to undo all of the locks, while the girls were slowly being lowered into the snake pit.

The catch? None of the keys actually worked. The aim of the challenge was to save their partners from being lowered into the pit no matter what. Who would have thought that all the guys would opt to block the entrance way physically rather than struggling with shitty locks? Everyone. Every smart guy would opt so save their yelling wife from entering a pit of snakes. If that isn’t your first instinct, you’re kinda dumb and your wife will be filing divorce papers very soon.

As expected, all 5 guys managed to block the entrance way and save their “damsels”. You know what would have been more fun and challenging? If the roles were reversed. Imagine that. No stereotypical “damsels” waiting for men to come and save them. Odds are the girls would have killed the challenge too.

Viki went all in and wagered 50k, while Marzanne also went high and wagered 43k. Another cycle, another big haul for Dyllan and Viki, and PJ and Marzanne. At this stage, it seems impossible that the winning couple won’t be one of them. It’s hard to imagine that. Crystal played it a little safer and wagered the least – 28k. I’m also surprised Emile and Razia aren’t taking more chances since they’re the only couple at the moment remotely close to PJ and Marzanne and Dyllan and Vix.

The episode was probably a good thing for Dean and Crystal. Crystal, being used to Dean’s competitive nature and his rather negative attitude when she made mistakes during challenges, is always scared of disappointing him. It led to them having a little altercation, but things seemed to have been restored between them the next morning. Dean owned up to it and apologized. It’s really impossible not to like Crystal at this point.

The girls challenge was also mostly easy.

The producers decided to shake things up and invited special guests to join the challenge: the girls’ mother-in-laws. PJ’s confession that he calls his mother on a daily basis reminded me that Afrikaans mothers and Jewish mothers share a lot of similarities. There’s a quote in this movie “Bad Neighbours” where a wife gets a little angry when her husband, played by Seth Rogen, wants to call his mother for advice. The wife exclaims “You Jews and your f*cking mothers”. It was hilarious, and true. I always thought it’s applicable to Afrikaans mothers too. Okay. Moving on.

The girls and their mother-in-laws were suspended on a bench in the air. Together they were tasked to answer questions according to what they thought the guy’s answer would be. There were five questions in total pertaining to the guys’ relationships with their mothers and wives. For each question the ladies got wrong, the bench was dropped by a few metres. Get more than 2 questions wrong and you’re back on the ground and lose the challenge.

And again, every couple finished the challenge. The only couple who came close to losing the challenge was Dean and Crystal after Crystal and Dean’s mom answered two questions wrong. “Who is the most forgiving?” really should have been an easy questions for Crystal, but they guessed it was his mom.

All the guys wagered big money, and again, that was the only thing differentiating the couples. Ivan wagered the least, and that meant Ivan and Roshila drops from 3rd to last place with 150k. Dean and Crystal were sitting on 153k, and Emile and Razia were sitting in third.

I’d be surprised if Ivan and Roshila were voted out against Dean and Crystal, but I don’t think Emile and Razia are out of the woods yet...

Next week shitty decisions will surely be required to make.
