Power Couple SA Recap: Ice Ice Baby

That’s more like it.

The fifth episode of Power Couple SA was likely its strongest yet: one really harrowing challenge, and finally a little bit of game talk that featured the A-word – alliance.

Mo and Phindi weren’t happy about how eliminations were going, Mo arguing that relationships and friendships were just a thinly veiled excuse for alliances. They don’t think decisions on which couple to eliminate should be based purely on relationships, but when Ivan asked whether they based their decisions on game performances, they couldn’t give a definite answer either. He pointed out that Gift and Bana had no money, a big 0, in their electronic wallet, so the game play argument was pretty thin. After that exchange, I was still confused about what Mo and Phindi base their decisions on. Not relationships, not strong game play, but possibly on the couple who would get them farther in the game? Maybe.

Later, during another conversation featuring Ivan and Mo and Phindi, the latter asked where the relationship line is going to be drawn – what’s going to happen when only the friends are left? Alliances, yes, alliances. That was Ivan’s response. He’s right. PJ and Marzanne are already in a friendship alliance with Dyllan and Vix, albeit too small an alliance to be very effective. Ivan also confesses that the couples they’re friends with are the biggest competition, and thus it makes sense to vote them out.

Yes.

But by the end of the episode, Ivan and Roshila aren’t sitting very pretty, and could very well be in trouble of going home. Strong and early game play could come back to bite you in the ass, unfortunately. You see it regularly on reality game shows: the one who speaks game too quickly could be sent out the door just as quickly. Holding thumbs for them to hang on, because the show needs some game players.

Alright, challenges.

The guys were up first in what was a multitasking challenge. They had to complete a list of chores in a certain time – like packing a lunchbox (there’s the word, PJ), walking a hilarious fake dog, and picking up clothes. Truth be told, this was really rather easy, too easy. For most, that is. Every couple completed the challenge, except for one. Dean and Crystal and PJ and Marzanne scored the most: Crystal waged 42k on Dean, while Marzanne went for 40k. After completing the challenge, they sat on 92k and 90k respectively. The only guy who failed to complete the challenge was Mo. That dog was too much to handle. Phindi waged 33k on him, but after failing, they sat at 17k.

Now the girls’ challenge on the other hand was much, eh, tastier. The guys were submerged and locked inside a see-through casket of ice for 4 minutes. The girls were tasked with getting their partners out of there. The catch? They had to finish a beautiful plate of “delicacies” before being able to turn the plate over, retrieve a code for the lock and eventually freeing their partners. I mean, the “delicacies” made for a flavourful Sunday Lunch. Sheep eyes, sheep testicles, ox liver, and ox trotters. Yum.

Emile was smart, only waging 13k on Razia completing the challenge. He also won major brownie points when he told her she doesn’t have to eat it. He’ll just take the 4 minutes in an ice casket. Then there was Ivan. He decided to wage their whole wallet, every cent, on Roshila – their whole 80k. She couldn’t do it, and like that they were down to 0. Also at 0, Mo and Phindi. Mo had to wager everything they had, he had no choice. Put up 17k and lost it when she couldn’t complete the challenge. Huge danger for these two couples next week. With a twist coming up next week, I wouldn’t be surprised if 2 couples are leaving.

The only couple to complete the challenge? PJ and Marzanne. After he waged 50k on Marzanne – quite a big number – he was rewarded. Marzanne proved that she was one tough cookie. She also loves shoes. She’ll do anything for shoes. Let’s hope PJ bought her that pair. They now sit at a good 140k in their electronic wallet. It wasn’t the first time they were the only couple to complete a challenge. They also beat the karaoke challenge a few weeks back. Does that put a target on their back? Let’s see. At the moment, they deserve to get very far.

What is the big twist? Will two couples be leaving the villa? Will Ivan and Roshila or Mo and Phindi save themselves next week by winning the Couples Challenge?

Shit is getting real.
