Idols South Africa Power Ranking: We Rank the Top 9
We’re down to the Top 9 after Nadia Herbst was predictably eliminated during Sunday’s Top 9 spectacular. Our #10 has left the building.
Will our #9 have the same fate? We sure hope so.
Reinhardt: Siphelele Ngcobo – It seems like his mission on this show is to bore viewers into submission. On Sunday, he delivered another shocking performance. He belongs in a church choir because he’s no star. It would be wrong if one of the other eight is sent home and boringele stays.
Justine: Siphelele Ngcobo – Based on his performances of the past couple of weeks Siphelele should be going home this week but I don't think that he will be the one eliminated. He has a certain eclectic charm about him but I think he is out of his depth in the competition.
Reinhardt: Elwira Standili – Vocally, she shouldn’t be this low. Her performance on Sunday was power all the way, maybe to the detriment of the performance. She just needs some help figuring out the power of her voice. She could crush a performance anytime she wants.
Justine: Dineo Moseki – I thought Dineo hit her lowest point last week but I was wrong. Her rendition of Beyonce's 'Broken-Hearted Girl' was painful to listen to. The pint-sized contestant is going to have to up her game drastically or she will find herself on the bus home very soon.
Reinhardt: Lungisa Xhamela – I don’t so see the last remaining wildcard get much further than this. The judges raved over his performance on Sunday, but his vocals on “Hurricane” did not impress me at all. He’s not living up to his star potential unfortunately, and is yet to deliver a great live performance. If he wants to stay longer, he’ll have to find his depth.
Justine: Elwira Standili – Elwira delivered a pretty solid performance of Christina Aguilera's 'Hurt' but she once again failed to connect with the song. I don't know how popular she is amongst the viewers because very little is said about her on social media. She could be the one leaving on Sunday.
Reinhardt: Amanda Antony – Again, based on her performances over the past two weeks, she’ll be in my Top 5 easily, but I get the feeling she doesn’t have the support. That’s sad. Her voice is pretty great, she just needs to learn to control it, and show restraint when she needs to. Her cover of “Because of You” was very strong. She just needs, and deserves, the votes.
Justine: Lungisa Xhamela – I have a very definitive love-hate relationship with Lungisa. He delivered a good-enough performance of Eric Benet’s ‘Hurricane’ but I was left feeling somewhat unsatisfied. His fans seem to have somehow regained their faith in him and hopefully he will show us some more star power in the weeks to come (should he survive this Sunday’s elimination)
Reinhardt: Dineo Moseki – Based on performance, she doesn’t deserve to be in the Top 5, but she has the support. The judges raved over her less than stellar Beyoncé vocal on Sunday, but I thought it was shit. The vocals were all over the place, and she just yelled out the second half of the song. Poor Beyonce. She probably has the weakest voice of the four girls left in te competition.
Justine: Rhema Varrie – Rhema has a lot of fans who believe he can do no wrong. He has a beautiful tone to his voice and seems like a genuinely nice guy but he is as stiff as a corpse on stage and this can cost him dearly in the end. Until he lightens up and performs instead of just singing I can’t rank him higher than #5!
Reinhardt: Rhema Varrie – Over the past two weeks, Rhema has proven himself vocally, no doubt about that. He can sing. What I’m not convinced of is his star quality. His performances are very rigid and tight – he needs to chill. He has no chill. Smile a little more. If he can do that, he’ll do even better. Randall is right: Rhema needs an up tempo track this week, otherwise he’s a one trick pony.
Justine: Loyiso Gijana – The youngster with the easy smile drops down a spot this week after a mediocre rendition of 'Gravity' by Sara Barreilles. He has one of the largest and most outspoken fan bases and could very well win the whole shebang.
Reinhardt: Loyiso Gijana – Loyiso is struggling to live up to his Sam Smith cover from a few weeks back. That was incredible. His “Gravity” performance wasn’t as good as the judges thought it was, but his voice is good, and he has star quality in buckets. He’s showing a lot of maturity for his age, too. I just don’t think he has the support to get further.
Justine: Amanda Antony – Amanda surprised me yet again and this could mean trouble for the other contestants. If she continuous to deliver solid performances and peak at the right time Ms Antony might just be crowned the Season 11 winner!
Reinhardt: Mmatema Moremi – This girls has so much haters, it’s insane. Poor girl. Or poor girls on talent shows in general. It’s hard. She has a great voice and has the looks of a star, and although her performance of “Warrior” wasn’t fantastic, it was still strong. Somizi wants her to pick a more mellow song this week, like she can’t kill that too. She’s still well on her way to becoming this season’s runner-up.
Justine: Karabo Mogane – Karabo remains at #2 this week after a soulful yet safe rendition of Adele’s ‘Rolling in the Deep’. I really want him to break free of his restrictions and rock my socks off! He still has the largest social media fan base and has already been labelled the winner of this season by many but one of the ladies might just give him a good run for his money!
Reinhardt: Karabo Mogane – Where he’s going to be every week. He has the support, so it doesn’t matter what he or any of the other contestants does for the next few weeks. He’s the winner, never mind that he does the same type of performance every week, or is basically just another Musa. The viewers have their definition of an Idol, and he’s it. Basically, the definition, or equation, is just a bland, but nice guy + chill (or just bland again) + good enough voice.
Justine: Mmatema Moremi – It was a close call for the number 1 spot this week but I gave it to Mmatema again as she just comes across as a more polished performer than Karabo. I hope to see her in the final at least as she is definitely destined to be a star and seems to have won over a few new fans during the week.
