Power Couple SA Recap: High Heels and High Pitches
Episode 3 of M-Net’s reality show Power Couple was definitely its best so far. Or should I say, it definitely had its fair share of high notes and balanced the serious with the fun very well.
Both challenges this week were a lot of fun, especially the girls’ challenge. It balanced the drama of last week’s first elimination – where PE’s Juran and Juanita was the first couple to be sent packing – with a lot of laughter this week. Although a few couples had a lot riding on the second challenge, it never weighed down the show. They have fun, we have fun.
It was a new week, so a new electronic wallet for each couple was set at 50k at the start of the first challenge – the guys’ challenge, but you could say the girls’ challenge was much harder for the guys, as well as everyone’s ears no doubt.
For the first challenge, the girls had to put a wager on their partner’s ability to find five items of their wardrobe among rails of other clothes. The catch: the guys had to find those items on a rotating platform, wear high heels, and had to complete the task within five minutes. As the guys found the correct items, the girls had to put them on.
Phindi wagered 41k on her hubby Mo completing the task, and Razia again when a little high when she wagered 38k on Emile. Yet again, it paid off for Emile and Razia. He completed the task in the quickest time, but it was Mo and Phindi who top the leader board after Mo successfully completed the task. Mo and Phindi sit on 91k while Emile and Razia also did well with 88k.
The winners of last week’s first couples challenge found them in trouble this week after PJ narrowly failed the challenge. Marzanne wagered 30k on PJ, but time just ran out, meaning they sat on 20k.
There was bigger trouble for Dyllan and Vix and Gift and Bana, though. Both Vix and Bana wagered 35k on their partners, and lost it, after both failed to complete the challenge. Down to 15k in their electronic wallet, they’re in pretty big danger.
The girls’ challenge turned out to be make or break for those three couples. The challenge? Tone Deaf Karaoke. The guys were required to wager on their partner’s knowledge of music. The guys, coupled with headphones only they could hear, had to sing-along to the songs in their ear, and the girls had to name the song and artist. With only six songs, they had to correctly name five.
PJ kinda set up Dyllan beforehand, telling him about the strategy of not wagering all the cash you have left, so if you lose the challenge, you still have a few thousand left, and with that securing your place of safety. Both went in with the same idea, but PJ narrowly got the better of Dyllan. He wagered 17k of their 20k on Marzanne while Dyllan wagered 13k of their 15k on Vix. If both lost, PJ and Marzanne would have 1k more.
Gift decided to go all in, wagering their whole 15k on Bana completing the challenge.
Everyone was bad. The singing was horrendous. And a lot of fun. PJ and Marzanne was the only couple who managed to complete the challenge, while the other six couples failed.
That meant PJ and Marzanne brought their total up to 37k, securing their safety at least until the couples challenge next week, while Dyllan and Vix dropped to 2k. Gift and Bana have nothing.
Gift and Bana and Dyllan and Vix have to win next week’s couples challenge to secure their safety. Gift and Bana have no choice, while Dyllan and Vix just have to hope the Afrikas don’t win it. But: win it. It’s all in your hands. You can’t leave it up to chance at this point.
One of those two couples will be up for elimination next week against whichever couple loses the challenge. This is going to be interesting, and I must say, I’m looking forward to it. If the show manages to balance the seriousness of it with all the fun and laughter of this week’s episode, the season could be a lot of fun.
