Idols South Africa: Who Will Make It To The Top 10?
The top 8 guys performed and did pretty well. The top 8 girls performed and did pretty shitty. The guys kicked their asses, figuratively of course.
With that said, four guys and four girls will make it to the Top 10 based on viewer votes. Then there are the two wild card spots, which should likely go to two of the guys who weren’t lucky enough to get sufficient votes. Or will the judges ride the gender equality train into a barrage of shit and decide to pick one guy and one girl? We’ll see.
Taking a stab at predicting the Top 10 isn’t that easy, because we know by now viewers can vote like deaf shits when they want to, but here goes.
The four guys to make it through on votes:
Karabo Mogane: Karabo is pretty much the fan favourite now. Dishwater personalities don’t put viewers off it seems. His performance of Sam Smith’s ‘I’m not the only One’ was a strong vocal performance, but he still misses that spark. Look for Karabo to be this season’s Musa.
Loyiso Gijana: Over the past two weeks, we’ve seen 16 performances, and Loyiso’s beautiful cover of Sam Smith’s ‘Lay me down’ was, in my books, at the top of the pile. At only 16 years old, he has the potential to be an incredible talent. He has the personality, the looks, and the voice to be a commercial star.
Lungisa Xhamela: Pegged as the favourite after theatre week, he was sitting in a great spot, but after an underwhelming Top 16 performance, he has slipped a few spots. Still, he’s smooth and has the star quality, and support, to get him comfortably through. He might make it all the way to the end.
Thami Shobede: Thami gave a solid performance Top 16 round, and might just pip Ruan Grobbelaar for the fourth and final spot. Ruan gave the better performance, but Thami is likely to get the votes.
The four girls to make it through on votes:
Mmatema Moremi: Like Lungisa, she was sitting high after theatre week. She was the star of hell week, no doubt. Her Top 16 performance was good, but not great, but given the girls did so poorly, she should still be top of the pile.
Dineo Moseki: Little Dineo probably wasn’t the 2nd favourite girl going into her first live performance, but she swung on the ‘Chandelier’ and won a lot of viewers over. She gave a solid but not great performance, but her guts and personality should take her through.
Nadia Herbst: Nadia has all the makings of a pop starlet, but Ellie Goulding’s ’50 Shades’ anthem was a little too big for her. She should sing more up tempo pop songs. That said, her performance was all in all good enough for a top four spot.
Elwira Standili: Plagued by a song that did not allow her voice to soar, Elwira stumbled over a ‘Style’ that does not fit her. She has one of the biggest voices in the competition, and I hope for her to show that.
The two wild card spots:
Ruan Grobbelaar: Ruan is a no brainer. Personally, I think he should make the Top 10 based on votes alone, but his George Ezra song choice probably wasn’t widely known enough with regards to the general Idols audience. Be a smart boy, Ruan.
Nina Terblanche: This is a toughie. If the judges want to give a spot to one of the girls, Nina could stand a solid chance. Again, her song choice was piss poor, but she has the voice and, at 16 years of age, the potential to grow.
The biggest wild card when it comes to predicting the results is Amanda Antony. Her cover of Beyonce’s ‘Drunk in Love’ was a disaster, except for a few vocal spots here and there. She could find herself in the top 4 vote getters. If she does, Nadia Herbst will not advance based on votes, but she’ll likely get the last wild card spot. This will be the biggest question come Sunday.
