Power Couple SA: Will you be tuning in?

Tomorrow night M-Net premieres its highly anticipated new romantic reality show Power Couple SA, a welcome addition to their local programming for those viewers who are tired of hearing people sing out of tune, or watching people locked up in a house together for three months.

Power Couple introduces us to eight couples from all across South Africa who go all in on love – in the hope of winning more than a Million Rand in prize money. How would you fare if you faced a series of challenges and your partner had to bet on your odds of succeeding? That’s the question these eight couples face during the completion.

The show not only tests the couples’ physical ability and endurance, but their trust, communication skills and faith in each other, according to M-Net. If the show’s casting was done well, we could be in for a treat. Who doesn’t want to see a partner’s face when they realize the person their married to don’t really know him or her at all? I’m not sure that’s going to happen, but hey, it’s always a possibility.

The premiere sees the ladies getting down and dirty to retrieve their partner’s sentimental items, and the guys hanging onto their partners for dear life, whilst answering questions about their relationships. It does sound like a good recipe for some drama.

Who are the lucky couples who’ll duke it out for the Million Rand? Here they are:

Dyllan Smith and Viki van den Barselaar-Smith are from Salt Rock in KZN and have been married for six years, but together for 18. Ah, high school sweethearts. From their little TV package, they seem like the couple most prone to drama – affair and all.

Gift and Bana Afrika are entrepreneurs from Johannesburg. They have been married for two years and have no kids. No pressure.

Emile and Razia Samson reside in Johannesburg, and share a passion for fashion and have been married for nine years. They have a daughter. Best Dressed couple, then?

Ivan and Roshila Jarosz are from Pretoria. They have been married for eight and a half years, but have no kids, only dogs, who they consider as their kids. Agreed, dogs are cuter.

Dean and Crystal Mason are nutritionists and fitness professionals from Cape Town. They’ve been married for seven and a half years and have one daughter. Sounds like physical challenges will be their bitch.

Juran Banfield and Juanita de Andrade (Yep, unmarried) are from Port Elizabeth. Only great people come from PE, says a very objective writer. They have been dating for two years. This could be interesting.

Mo and Phindi Grootboom are media executives from Durban. They have been married for ten years and have three children – two girls and a boy. Sound like possible winners, eh?

PJ and Marzanne Kleinhans are newlyweds from Cape Town. When they first entered the show, they had been married for only a month, but have been together for five. I don’t know, the wedding buzz could have worked in their favour.

What do you think? Will you be tuning in?

Power Couple SA starts Thursday, 10 September on M-Net, channel 101.
