Idols South Africa Power Ranking: How Do the Top 8 Girls Stack Up?
Last week I ranked the Top 8 guys, this week it’s the girls who come under the microscope. The guys performed and while some tanked, others impressed: Lungisa and Rhema, who ranked first and third respectively, are certain to drop a few spots on a possible new ranking. Others, like Karabo who was ranked eight, would take a massive leap into the top 2.
Naturally, the same shit could happen to the girls on Sunday. It probably will. Taking a stab at ranking the girls is actually a much easier task. The guys were tougher to rank, but the girls are much more straightforward.
This ranking is not based on this week’s song choices, but their road to where they are now. The song choices will shake the ranking up – certainly Amanda’s. I’m not as blown away by Elwira’s choice to sing Taylor Swift’s ‘Style’, or Dineo’s choice to take on Sia’s tough ‘Chandelier’. So, it’s important to know song choice was not a factor in these rankings.
Yes, her audition was cool. Bridgitt’s tone and vibe would fit perfectly into a band like Echosmith. I can easily see her doing that. Then came her last solo theatre round, and it kinda fell flat. Her version of Lorde’s ‘Team’ missed her mark, and I was sure she won’t be joining the team. I was wrong. Here she is. For one performance, I guess. Bridgitt belongs in an indie punk band. I would get behind that.
This talented 16-year-old has loads of potential. She has a great tone, but pit her up against fellow 16-year-old Loyiso Gijana, and it’s like day and night. She needs more time to fully develop her voice. The Voice could be a good fit in a few years.
She probably should have been in the Top 16 all along. “Thank fuck,” she said after Nonhle was forced to withdraw from the competition, and she was given the lucky loser spot. She’s good, but the other five girls bring more to the table. That said, I won’t be surprised if she makes it into the top 10. She has the voice and appeal to surprise, and her song choice for Sunday, Beyonce’s ‘Drunk in Love’ could send her into the top 3 no doubt.
There was a lot of unfair hate hurled towards this plaasmeisie after her Top 16 inclusion, but she deserved her spot. She’s young, fresh, and has the look and feel of a pop star. Sure, she doesn’t have the best vocals, but that sure did not stop Katy Perry and Rihanna from becoming two of the biggest pop stars in the world. Katy can barely sing for shit live.
I love this girl’s spunk. I love her star quality. And she’s small. She, similar to Nadia, just has that star appeal. Unfortunately, women are threatened by other women who have the confidence to believe in themselves. In the Idol world, confidence quickly gets mistaken for arrogance, and when you’re perceived like that, it’s dangerous times. Dineo deserves to make the top 10. She brings something different to all the others, and we need different.
She might have made history by becoming the first drag queen to make it into the voting stages, but I’m afraid the audience isn’t ready for that. That said, Shenay’s final solo audition was fantastic: she was given a very contemporary dance track and turned it into a moody, smouldering, artistic interpretation. It was probably the most artistic performance of the season thus far. I hope she can nail another well known contemporary song this week.
Daaaaaaaaaamn, this girl came out of nowhere during the last solo theatre week auditions. Before she performed, I was more “Who is she?” than “This is going to be good”. It was more than good. It was a vocal tour de force. It was beautiful and powerful and surely made her a threat. She could be a vocal beast. It’s been a while since we’ve had a consistently great female singer on this show.
Mmatema had arguably the best theatre week of any contestant. Her group performance was one of the very few that was actually good, and her final solo audition was even better. She has big competition from Elwira, but she seems like a solid #1 at the moment. I’m looking forward to these two girls battling it out.
Who do you think has the best shot at taking the crown? Is it Mmatema vs Elwira? Please share your thoughts!
