Idols South Africa Power Ranking: How Do The Top 8 Guys Stack Up?
Welcome to the first Power Ranking of the season, where the contestants billed to perform on Sunday are stacked up against one another to see just where they stand. On Sunday, they have the power to change the ranking completely, but for now, this is how they stand.
8. Phila Madlingozi Dude isn’t a very popular figure at the moment. Coming off as a rich brat and a little arrogant would do that to a person’s image. On top of that, he still hasn’t sold viewers on his talent, never standing out. Sure, he can hold a note, but he’ll be in deep trouble come first elimination.
7. Karabo Mogane Bland. Like Somizi told him during his first audition, he has as much personality as dishwater. To make up for that, his voice must be out of this world, but so far, he hasn’t shown that it is. He doesn’t stand out. The rest of the guys completely overshadow him. Karabo seems like a nice guy, but it shouldn’t cut it.
6. Siphelele Ngcobo His last solo audition was pretty strong. His version of “Loliwe” was good, but he hasn’t yet shown us what he can do out of his comfort zone. If he nails a song that’s not in his vernacular, he could move up this ranking for sure. There’s a strong voice there, he just needs to show us.
5. Ruan Grobbelaar Ruan’s voice is different and unique enough for him to stand out from the crowd, but he’s also the guy who probably had the least amount of screen time so far, so when he steps on that stage on Sunday, he’ll have to win some votes. There’s an artist in there. I hope his song choice is out of the box.
4. Thami Shobede We first saw Thami during the season premiere where his story surely touched some hearts. He’s definitely tough enough for this show after his time in the Defense Force, and his likability and charisma can only push him forward. His voice is strong, and he can sing pop just as well as anything else. A full package.
3. Rhema Varrie We also met Rhema during the season premiere where his soul shone through his voice. He’s likely the guy with the most soul, and the grit and depth in his voice will only make his performances all the more believable. Looking forward to his first live performance, hopefully it’s a great bluesy soul song that he can really sink his teeth into.
2. Loyiso Gijana Hailing from Uitenhage (Can you believe it?), this 16-year-old has stood out since his first audition. Another contestant with the full package, he reminds me of a younger – and South African – Jason Derulo. He has the looks, the likability, and the smooth voice. Don’t forget the moves. If he chooses his songs well, he could be here for a long time.
1. Lungisa Xhamela Lungisa really, in my mind, only came to the forefront of this competition with his final solo audition. His smooth Michael Jackson performance surely made the love feel good for many a viewer, and he does tick all the boxes. He has a very strong shot at this, and his already big fan base doesn’t hurt. There’s some tough competition, so he cannot afford to mess up more than once or twice. At the moment, Lungisa is golden.
